Yikes! Talk about times that are apart! A bit too much pressure here for sure on the black Namiki Falcon sporting a factory fine tip. I was able to get the tines together again and the client is now back in business.

Often is the question that comes across my desk is the request to turn an extra fine nib into a larger, often a BBB size retip. Concerns about the shortening of the nib are justified, but as you can see below in the two photos, one before, the other after, there is really no need to be worried. Sure, some length is lost due to the shear size increase from, lets say, .2mm to 1.5mm, but the taper of the nib can be quite dramatic, which allows retipping with minimal loss of length. Finally, once the nib is set with the feed, only the most minor adjustment of the feed is necessary, if any, as we all know that most feeds are almost never right at the tipping material, but always behind.

Judge for yourself and you can see, the once extra fine Montblanc 149 now sporting a BBB 1.5mm ball look nice, proportional, and well suited for some seriously wet ink delivery!

Greetings, and Happy Holidays to all! It has been a wonderful year for the “Minuskin Nib Works” and early this morning, Christmas Eve morning, I received this wonderful message from a new client. Sam’s writing below reads like a message to Santa Claus, which, for him, is me, for his nib! Please read below and enjoy. Happy Holidays to all!

Thank you Mr. Santa Claus !

The MB 149 nib with the fantastic 1.5 mm round ball tip arrived today in the mail.

When I came home today after work, tired and ready to hit the sac, my wife showed me a package from a Mr. Minuskin.

Unable to contain my excitement on seeing that it had arrived so soon, I opened the package (while my kids gazed at me

with a look of scrutiny …. they have to wait until Christmas morning to open a package, and yet here I was opening what looked to be a

ordinary package, but with way too much excitement – they knew something was fishy !)

Before they started to ask why I was allowed to open a package two days earlier to Christmas morning,

I proceeded to clarify by letting them know it was just a work related package and quickly escaped to mount the nib and test it out.

After making sure to mount the nib properly, I tested out the nib with much enthusiasm, but only to find ….

that the nib writes smooth as BUTTERRRRR….

The nib is amazing ! I am not a man who likes stubs, and I know I am in the minority with that opinion. I wanted a big broad nib which

writes smooth as butter, without any line variation.

On top of this, the nib performs excellent with the same wonderful ink flow held at any angle, and with all kinds of paper !

To top it all of, the flex properties of the nib are remaining even after the retipping process, to give a wonderful writing experience.

This gift arrived to me 2 days before Christmas, so all I can say is Santa Claus heard my wish, and rewarded me with an amazing gift.

So Greg, or Santa as I should refer to you from know on, thank you very much for such an amazing job, and for taking so much care and interest.

I can assure you that I will be sending many more nibs your way from now on.

And if you would like proof of my excitement :) , please note that I am writing this e-mail to you at 4:51 in the morning, as I just stopped writing

with this fantastic nib, to send this e-mail :)

    Kind Regards,

    – Sam

I recently had the pleasure of retipping 7 nibs for a new client in Japan. “Dr. H” recently received the nibs back and sent this one photo to start with shown above. He is very happy as indicated by his comments below. I am not sure about the “god like” reference, but I am happy nevertheless to assist him, and appreciate his business. Turn around time with this order was just 4 days!

    Dear Mr. Greg Minuskin
I have already received (the) brilliant nibs.
How wonderful & brilliant my nibs are (now)!
Your work is indeed the God hand!
(Currently) I am … set(ting) them to my pens.
I am thinking that I would send (you some) photos of (the nibs I am) setting up.
Thank you very very much for your attention.

A Handmade Pen In My Hand

A Handmade Pen In My Hand

    .
Okay, I know, it is a ball point.

With that out of the way, I spent an evening at Woodcraft in Stanton, California, making this kit pen. First, I have to tell you that the store, Woodcraft, is amazing. Clean, organized, wood and tools I have never heard of, and such a friendly staff too boot! The class to turn the pen was on a side room to the store from 5pm to 9pm. Jeanette was our teacher, and she had the patience of a saint when it came to using these machines, especially with the two 13 year old boys in attendance with me. It was really nice to see both grown-ups and kids spending time together in a classroom setting, making things, learning together. When is the last time you saw your child away from the TV or computer, making something? Also it was good to see there is still a keen interest in “old world” craftsmanship! As you know, I work with my hands, “crafting” the nib retips/regrinds, so seeing other folks engaged in a hands on activity really gave me a good feeling.

We picked our materials; I chose teak. Wearing safety glasses, we then learned how to use a band saw, drill press, glue, counter sink bit, wood lathe with special mandrel to turn the two sections, and finally a heat activated wax based stain. Finally assembly which involved a special press to friction fit the the clutch parts of the pen, clip cap, and “nib” of the pen. I had to chuckle a little inside as when Jeanette said the “nib” of the pen was going to be press fitted into the bottom barrel. Pictures below of some of the process.

For a fun evening, I suggest checking out your local Woodcraft http://www.woodcraft.com/stores/ (they seem to be a chain of stores, similar to a Michael’s craft store) or a Jo-Anns fabric store.
