Direct for Italy, this customer sent me these Montblanc nibs for retipping with a large, triple broad ball. Once they are set in the pens, they will be quite large and smooth writers. The trick on these nibs with the platinum plating on top is to make sure that the plating does not get discolored or come off during the retipping process. Let me make your nib a broad ball today! Turn around time is just 2 weeks, no long waits here.

This was another challenge to come into the Greg Minuskin workshop! On this Green Marble Ecrolessi there was an attempt to make this nib by another an italic, but the results were less the ideal, as the first three pictures demonstrate. Uneven ground tines, along with a writing foot that an orthopedic surgeon would just roll his/her eyes over, and you have the makings of a nib that will skip, catch, and perform poorly.

Dismounting the nib, I had to really study this situation. After doing some pencil drawings, and then writing down a plan of attack, I proceeded to regrind the nib to a true, smooth, italic, that is now even, symmetrical, and is also aesthetically pleasing to behold. Suffice it to say the nib now writes wonderfully, and I am sure the owner of this pen will enjoy it for many years to come.

Just finished these two Pelikan nib which now sport really nice, extra fine needlepoint tips. Grinding these tips, after retipping, is quite involved, and especially on very fine, flexible nibs. As you can see in the photos below, the results are what count, but they also look pretty too :-)

This was a challenge! Regrinding an vintage, original tipping to a Waterman’s 100 Year Pen is difficult, as the tipping material is often brittle, and breaks during the regrind process. Going slow, with a steady hand, I was able to turn this fine nib into a really nice,  somewhat smooth fine italic(italics after all are sharp to begin with.) The ink flow on a Waterman’s is very generous, and getting the flow so that it will not be over abundant takes time, as the nib tines have to be brought together much closer then a regular medium or broad tip, which requires more ink.

Just received this dove grey Parker 51 in the mail today from a new client; seems that he was having problems with ink flow. I am sure that once I get it throughly cleaned up, it will be in good shape again. Please see the photos below. Oh, the ink that is lodged in this pen is permanent ink, which I highly advise against using in all Parker 51 pens.

I received a Montblanc broad stub from “Matthew” just last week. The nib was quite miss-aligned, and suffering from poor ink flow. After a careful regrind of the tipping and proper alignment of the tines, Matthew is enjoying his “singing” pen once again. Matthew, from Hawaii, is quite pleased:

    Greg,

Thank you VERY MUCH for fixing my signer.  It flows beautifully now.  Didn’t realize how broad it was until I matched it up with my medium.  I can write with my medium, but signing should be done with this guy.

Thanks again.  If there’s anywhere you’d like me to post about your service and such, let me know.

    Aloha,
    Matthew

After doing a couple of extra fine regrinds for a client of mine who is a neurosurgeon, and provided some writing samples with the nibs from my wife, I received this response below:

    Dear Greg

Well I am thinking now to leave my career as neurosurgeon and join you to teach me how do you do this wonderful work and also your wife to learn how could i write beautifully like her.
    Best Regards

    Y

So, you want ink flow? Here are some monster ball retips for you to enjoy on two Conklin nibs and a V-Parker. Also a broad stub on one of the Toledo Conklin.   Remember to click on the photos for a closer look.

Here is a really nice, extra fine needlepoint regrind on an Aurora nib. Very sharp and quite precise. These regrinds are especially good for small, fine detail writing, and afford the user the ability to do line drawings with precision that only a pencil could do. However, a pencil has to be constantly sharpened, here you have unlimited fine line abilities available to you.
